Meet the Book
This is the book's own stage: al-Muʿallim Butrus al-Bustani — the Teacher, in his portrait of 1884 — stands on the stage, for it was he who took this chronicle in hand, corrected it, and advanced the cost of its printing, while Tannus al-Shidyaq's book is read aloud in Arabic, in Kareem's voice. Tannus al-Shidyaq (c. 1794–1861), secretary to the Shihabi emirs, wrote the first history of Lebanon by a Lebanese hand: the land and its peoples, its old houses, Fakhr al-Din, and the coming of the Shihabs to the Mountain. What’s Inside
- Akhbār al-Aʿyān fī Jabal Lubnān — the Mountain's story, first movement: the land and its peoples exactly as the author described them; the old houses of the Mountain; Fakhr al-Dīn the Maʿnid; and the coming of the Shihabs to the Mountain (1697) — أخبار الأعيان في جبل لبنان — in the author's own words.
- 3 hours 33 minutes of narration — Kareem reads al-Shidyaq's chronicle aloud in Arabic, page by page, in a reading room you can follow with your eyes, while al-Bustani's portrait stands on the stage.
- The chronicle al-Bustani himself published — al-Shidyaq wrote it for the Shihabi emirs he served; al-Bustani corrected the manuscript with his own hand and advanced the cost of its Beirut printing (1855–1859).

This is the public-domain text of Tannus al-Shidyaq's Akhbār al-Aʿyān fī Jabal Lubnān (Beirut, 1855–59), presented as a talking hologram book in the author's own Arabic. Al-Shidyaq died in 1861, more than a hundred and sixty years ago. This volume carries the chronicle's first great movement — the land and its peoples, the old houses, Fakhr al-Dīn, and the coming of the Shihabs; its genealogy rolls and passed-over annals are set aside, and the book's opening disclaimer says so plainly rather than claim nothing was taken away. The narration is a synthesized Arabic reading (Piper — Kareem) of that text, made for this edition; the figure on the stage is al-Bustani's portrait of 1884, painted by Dawud Qurm — al-Bustani corrected this chronicle and published it, and Volume One carries his own book.
